Young people and adults together as part of The Real Life Project community

About the programme

Real life. Real futures.

The Real Life Project is an alternative provision programme built on a simple belief: that every young person, given the right environment and the right opportunities, can find their path.

Our story

The Real Life Project was founded in response to a growing crisis in alternative provision — too many young people cycling through placements that didn't stick, leaving education without the skills, confidence, or connections they needed to move forward.

We set out to do something different. Instead of bringing the world into a classroom, we take young people out into the world. Real workplaces. Real skills. Real relationships with adults who believe in them.

What started as a small local initiative has grown into a structured programme that works alongside schools, families, and employers to give young people the foundation they need for adult life.

Young person with a hopeful expression

Our mission

To give young people who are disengaged from education the real-world experiences, skills, and connections they need to build a positive future.

01

Real

Everything we do is grounded in genuine experience — real workplaces, real skills, real relationships. No simulations, no shortcuts.

02

Relational

We believe young people thrive when they feel known and valued. Every interaction is built on trust, consistency, and genuine care.

03

Purposeful

We don't fill time — we build futures. Every activity, visit, and session is designed with a clear outcome in mind.

04

Collaborative

We work alongside schools, families, and employers — not in isolation. The best outcomes happen when everyone pulls in the same direction.

Our approach

The programme is built around four pillars that reflect what young people actually need to move forward in life.

01

Real Skills

Practical, transferable skills that employers value — from communication and teamwork to problem-solving and showing up on time.

02

Real Experience

Structured workplace visits and placements that give young people a genuine taste of the working world before they leave education.

03

Real Connections

Relationships with local employers, mentors, and professionals who can open doors and offer guidance beyond the programme.

04

Real Futures

A planned, supported transition into employment, further education, or training — with the confidence and tools to make it stick.

Safeguarding

The safety and wellbeing of every young person on the programme is our highest priority. All staff hold enhanced DBS clearance and receive regular safeguarding training. We follow robust policies and procedures in line with statutory guidance, and we work closely with referring schools and families to ensure every young person is supported appropriately throughout their time with us.
